Old Capitol Brew Works has been in existence since 2004. Old Capitol Brew Works is in a little “restaurant row”; the middle facilities are the nice restaurant and the college pub. The restaurant is called “The Brewery”, and labeled by Fodor’s as “arguably the most beautiful restaurant in Iowa City” (although Fodor’s also mentioned linen tablecloths which we never saw) and the bar is called “Old Capitol Public House”. The dining area was adorned with dark wood paneling and crafted accents, and a large polished wood bar stands between the dining area and the brass brew kettle and mash tun. The large glass windows, wood trim, and the very high ceilings gave this 1800’s factory a feel of open elegance. The Public House area was a college bar with loud music and pool tables.

I went to this place after they won. They were out of chicken, prok, and most beef. They only had two selections of beer, everything else was out. The service was slow, forgetful, and non existent. This was the worst experience I ever had at a pub. I will never return.

Simply put...True, Real Beer. Nobody else does it. So if you want real beer, go to Old Cap.

A great place for real beer brewed on site!

The blessing of the Bock is an event not to be missed. It's in late Feb or March...

A lot of the places listed on this page are NOT brewpubs! Ask for a good beer at most of these places, and they'll offer you "both kinds," Bud and Bud Light.

Fortunately, Old Cap doesn't even serve that St. Louis swill, and they make some pretty good ales. The pale, brown, and weiss beers are tasty, and usually part of the regular rotation, but what you really want to try are the specialty beers, such as the IPA, the aaah Bock (coming in late Feb.), or ales aged in Templeton Rye barrels. And don't miss the weekly firkin of cask ale, every Thursday at 5:30.

Ahh, Bock! The blessing of the bock should be at the end of February--first of March. Saint Arnold should be there!
