The Iowa City Public Library was established in 1896 and has served the community from a downtown location ever since. The Library is governed by a semi-autonomous nine member Board of Trustees empowered by state law and city ordinance (Title 11) to set policy, determine goals and objectives, Corner Reading Area control monies appropriated or given to the Library, and to employ staff. The Library is a city department, Board members are appointed by and principal operating funds approved by the City Council. Proceeds from sales at The Book End directly benefit these Iowa City Public Library programs: Children's Summer Reading Program, Teen Summer Reading Program, Art-To-Go, and Children's Day, in addition to being used to help the library purchase new collection materials!
